The 2025 North West regional leg of the Schindler Cup concluded with Padel Circle Potchefstroom (Team 2) lifting the regional crown. With standout performances across all categories, this well-balanced squad outclassed rivals including their own sister team (Team 1), Circle Padel Potchefstroom, and Techno Padel Potchefstroom.
The final saw Padel Circle (Team 2) edge out Padel Circle (Team 1) with a 3–1 victory. The men’s doubles match was especially tense, with Pirow Engelbrecht and Reuben De Klerk narrowly defeating the pairing of Heinrich Dettmann and Marius Smuts in a tight 7–6 battle. The ladies’ doubles followed suit with strong net play and high-energy baseline defense from Sunet De Klerk and Sonja Van Der Merwe, resulting in a 6–2 win over Sune Hermann and Sumari Muller.
The mixed doubles featured fluid transitions and well-placed lobs. Engelbrecht returned to the court alongside Van Der Merwe to win their match 6–2, while Team 1 salvaged some pride with a 6–3 victory in the second mixed doubles match thanks to strong performances by Dettmann and Muller.
Among the top individual performers, Pirow Engelbrecht stood out with a commanding presence in both mixed and men’s doubles. His decision-making, fast reactions, and high-percentage plays saw him win critical points under pressure. He partnered brilliantly with Sonja Van Der Merwe in mixed doubles, a pairing that proved decisive in both the group stages and the final.
Sonja Van Der Merwe was a dominant force throughout the tournament. In the ladies’ division, her collaboration with Sunet De Klerk was near-perfect, winning all of their matches in straight sets. Sunet herself displayed tremendous awareness and adaptability on court, contributing consistently to Team 2’s overall unbeaten run.
Reuben De Klerk deserves mention for his composure in the men’s division. Often targeted during rallies, his defensive play and well-timed overheads helped stabilize crucial match situations. On the other side, despite ending in second place, Heinrich Dettmann and Marius Smuts were instrumental in Padel Circle (Team 1)’s route to the final, with Dettmann’s deep drives and Smuts’ aggressive net positioning earning them key group-stage wins.
Techno Padel Potchefstroom entered the tournament as an outside contender but impressed during the group stage. Their strongest performances came in mixed doubles, particularly from the team of Ionne and Sarel Rossouw. Their ability to communicate and recover from mid-match deficits marked them as a tough team to beat. Although they didn’t make it to the final, their spirited performances were cheered on by the local crowd.
Circle Padel Potchefstroom, another local favorite, showed promise but struggled with consistency. Players like Johannes Adam, Johnny Giessing, and Nanette Da Fonseca produced several close matches, but the team ultimately fell short of breaking through to the top two. Nevertheless, their presence added energy and excitement to the group stages.
Padel Circle Potchefstroom (Team 2) now advance to the Schindler Cup 2025 National Finals, where they’ll face winners from other regional qualifiers. With a core of high-performing athletes and unmatched team cohesion, they will be entering the finals not just as regional champions, but as serious national title contenders.
While Team 1 will have to regroup and reflect on their narrow defeat, their performance secured a strong runner-up finish and possibly a chance at redemption through the lucky losers’ draw.
